Here at the Nicholson Center, we provide state-of-the-art inanimate tissue labs, which can accommodate a diverse selection of wet labs. Supplying trainees with the most realistic environment is extremely important, which is why we have fresh frozen tissue, a vast selection of instrumentation, and state-of-the-art OR training spaces.
Why we use cadavers
Cadavers have always served a pivotal role in the medical field, from Gross Anatomy 101 to surgeons having realistic training in their preparation for procedures on live patients. The value of authenticity should not be understated, because it helps surgeons minimize any possible miscues in the future.
The benefits of fresh frozen cadavers
While traditional, embalmed cadavers have their educational merits and allow trainees to see and experience the human anatomy, fresh frozen cadavers provide a more realistic experience. Cadavers requiring preservatives can end up with damaged, inflexible tissues. This can lead to difficulties when performing dissection, and can change surgeons’ perceptions of a procedure. However, fresh frozen cadavers offer a very similar experience to that of a live patient.
We are able to achieve a greater quality of fresh frozen cadaver tissue thanks to our close partnerships with tissue vendors, as well as our ability to store tissue at the facility. In addition, we have a full-time team dedicated to ensuring the tissue used is the best quality available and meets the needs requested by clients. These fresh frozen cadavers are particularly beneficial to international surgeons, as the United States has stricter policies on the quality of each specimen, and the process is generally smoother. We’ve received feedback from surgeons who have trained with us from Australia, Europe and South America, noting how the quality of the cadavers at our facility provides them with a much easier and effective way to train.
Our facility can accommodate fifty cadaver stations and includes a full audio visual team with the ability to record any aspect of training. Our experienced team has been working with cadaver tissue for more than ten years and has perfected a system for cadaveric training, tissue prep and management.
